The Calgary Mandarin School (formerly Calgary Chinese School) was started since 1975, conducting classes on Saturday morning. Initially the school utilized the classrooms of Western Canada High School. It was later moved to Westgate Elementary School and finally to our present address in Woodman Junior High School. Mr. David Pan had the honour of being the first Principal of the School. The Calgary Mandarin School is a non-profit educational body affiliated to the Sino-Canada Culture Association. The later plays the role of funding and directional guidance in Chinese Mandarin education. The organization is headed by the President assisted by the vice President and appointed committee members. Membership to the association is opened to all parents and public. The school is run by the Principal assisted by the Director of Education and teaching staff.
Presently the school offered classes ranging from Pre-school to Grade 12. Teaching is conducted in Mandarin and students are exposed to traditional Chinese characters. We taught Chu-Yin pronunciation (Taiwan) to students from Pre-school to Grade 2. From Grade 3 onward, students are taught Hanyu pinyin pronunciation (Mainland China). Besides academic subjects, the school also facilitates extra curriculum activities such as Junior badminton lessons, Chinese chess and singing classes. Since September 2008 we have scheduled our Saturday class hours from 9:30AM to 12:30PM. With increasing enrolment and limited available space we urged early enrolment by May to secure a spot in the class in Fall.
